Before I had a post on Happy Meals and I spoke about how they are very good for the company. People then responded by saying they might be good for the company, but it is bad because it lures children into eating fast food at an early age. I agree with this, and clearly some people in San Francisco do too. After election day the board of supervisors in the city actually banned happy meals from most McDonalds restaurants in the area. This was not one of the topics to vote on, as I just said it was decided by the board of supervisors. This shows that the government is finally starting to realize the horrors of fast food. And they have also realized that it is up to them to save our future. Kids are getting sucked in early, and they need to be the ones to break the chain. I would suspect that this new policy will spread to other major cities.

Now this is a strange Election Day vote. Too bad the fast foodies of San Francisco didn’t get a say in the decision. The city’s board of supervisors voted Tuesday to ban most of McDonald’s Happy Meals served at restaurants, according to a report in the Los Angeles Times.
McDonald’s spokeswoman Danya Proud told the paper that the chain was “extremely disappointed” with the decision. “It’s not what our customers want, nor is it something they asked for.”
Tell us: What do you think of this vote? Silly, or sane? Could your kid live without a Happy Meal fix?

I thought I read somewhere that the deal was the McD's could only put toys in "healthy" meals--though I'm not sure what on the menu would be healthy. Seems like this would be challenged in court. Will sugar cereals be required to no longer put toys in their boxes? Will candy no longer be able to use colorful wrappers? Seems like something that will require huge, regulatory changes.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe that happy meals were banned? However, I don't think that the government of San Francisco should be able to ban happy meals. If people want to get fat then let them do it. Although McD's is promoting junk food, no one is forcing the people to buy it.
ReplyDeletedid they do the same thing to the burger king equivalent of a happy meal?
ReplyDeletei agree with jack. the government shouldn't be able to control what the people eat and don't eat.
